TRAILS, BIRDING This beautiful forested area is steeped in tribal history and was one of several scenes of conflict between the British and colonial soldiers and the Xhosa people during the Frontier Wars of the 19th century. For many years the forest's timber was exploited for commercial and military purposes, and evidence of the early woodcutters' activities can still be seen. The Pirie Forest's indigenous vegetation harbours a rich and varied birdlife, which includes the rare Cape parrot, Knysna lourie (turaco) and forest weaver. Bushbuck are fairly common and spotted-neck otter occur in the dam. Location: South-east of province; north of King William's Town. Access: From King William's Town follow the R346 towards Stutterheim for 13 km, then turn left onto the gravel road to Maden Dam, which lies 7 km further on. The entrance to Pirie Forest is a short way beyond the dam; no vehicles are permitted in the forest. Accommodation: None. In King William's Town there are hotels and a caravan and camping site Other facilities: 2 hiking trails, 8 km and 9 km long; a picnic site at Maden Dam; an information centre. Open: Throughout the year
